In the search for corrosion-resistant treatments for carbon steel that are non-toxic, A*STAR researchers have developed a technique for investigating the effectiveness of a corrosion inhibitor that is safer and environmentally friendly.

Carbon steel, an alloy made from iron and carbon, is the single largest class of alloys in use today. It’s used to make a range of products from fences and springs to steel wires and pipelines, and for structural support in buildings, bridges, as well as nuclear power and fossil fuel power plants.

Professor Karl Ryder, of the University of Leicester, is a leading academic in the field of electrochemistry. As part of his research he has been developing novel environmentally-friendly methods of electroplating the components used in the aerospace and automotive industry, which currently use hazardous and toxic solvents. AZoM spoke to Karl about the novel solvents his research group are developing for electroplating and electropolishing, and the integral role optical profiling plays in his research.

JW: Please could you introduce our readers to the research you carry out at the University of Leicester?

KR: I’m part of a research group at the University of Leicester that carries out electrochemical and materials based research. Our research is primarily on surface coatings produced using techniques such as metal plating, but we research other metal electro-finishing methods like electro-dissolution and surface etching.

Ken Bellesine is SBA’s Kansas Small Business Person of the Year!

Central Electropolishing Company, Inc. serves 300 companies located in 48 states, Mexico, Canada and Puerto Rico

WICHITA, Kan. – Mr. Ken Bellesine, pictured 2nd from the left, the owner of Central Electropolishing Company, Inc. (CELCO), located in Anthony (Kansas) is SBA’s 2017 Kansas Small Business Person of the Year.

In late March, the head of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), Administrator Linda McMahon announced the 54 Small Business Person of the Year state and territorial winners.

Mr. Bellesine and the other 53 recipients are now competing for the 2017 National Small Business Person of the Year.  All awardees were invited to Washington, D.C. to participate in events and ceremonies on April 30-May 1, and Mr. Bellesine and his wife will be making the trip!

“I feel very honored to have been selected for this award, “said Bellesine. “I’ve remained focused on growing the business, and not looking for this kind of recognition. So, it was a nice surprise to be honored like this,” Bellesine continued.

Mr. Bellesine’s company, Central Electropolishing Co. (CELCO), has been owned, operated and managed by him and his family for 30 years. Bellesine started the company in the fall of 1986 with the assistance of a SBA loan.

Electropolishing is an electro-chemical metal finishing process that can make nickel, stainless steel and other metals shine like chrome. It can also remove or alter the elements already in the metal being polished to give it the desired qualities of passivity, smoothness, precise measurement or appearance.

The process takes place when the metal is soaked in hot baths of electrolytes, phosphoric and sulfuric acids, and electrically charged at a prescribed voltage, temperature and time.

Industrial sectors, such as medical, pharmaceutical, food production, vacuum systems and semiconductor production rely on the benefits of electopolishing for the quality, safety and efficiency of their products.

Since the first 3,000 square foot building was erected in 1986, CELCO has grown 15 times that size and currently does electropolishing work for approximately 300 companies, located in 48 states, Mexico, Canada and Puerto Rico. They also provide acid passivation, aqueous cleaning and oxygen cleaning services.

Bellesine attributes the company’s success to their focus on quality, delivery and price, in that order and not the other way around. He also has tremendous pride in the hard working staff, which includes his son Steve, the president, and two grandsons. CELCO has many long term employees that execute the technical work for the company. “We would not be where we are today without our great employees” concluded Bellesine.

Brokerage firm Macquarie Upgrades its rating on Reliance Steel & Aluminum Co(RS). The shares have been rated Outperform. Previously, the analysts had a Neutral rating on the shares. The rating by the stock financial advisor at Macquarie was issued on Mar 14, 2017 in a research report to their Investors and Clients.

In a different note, On Jan 9, 2017, KeyBanc said it Upgrades its rating on Reliance Steel & Aluminum Co. The shares have been rated ‘Overweight’ by the firm.

A flow control valve regulates the flow or pressure of a fluid. Control valves normally respond to signals generated by independent devices such as flow meters or temperature gauges.

Control valves are normally fitted with actuators and positioners. Pneumatically-actuated globe valves and Diaphragm Valves are widely used for control purposes in many industries, although quarter-turn types such as ball, gate and butterfly valves are also used.

Control valves can also work with hydraulic actuators. These types of valves are also known as Automatic Control Valves.

The hydraulic actuators will respond to changes of pressure or flow and will open/close the valve. Automatic Control Valves do not require an external power source, meaning that the fluid pressure is enough to open and close the valve. Automatic control valves include: pressure reducing valves, flow control valves, back-pressure sustaining valves, altitude valves, and relief valves. An altitude valve controls the level of a tank. The altitude valve will remain open while the tank is not full and it will close when the tanks reaches its maximum level.

The opening and closing of the valve requires no external power source, it is done automatically, hence its name.
