Brandon Bellesine, VP of Compliance at CELCO has been participating in a local manufactures’ group over the past couple of years. Working with the Coordinator of the Harper County Transition to Career (T2C) Program and local schools, students toured various facilities to learn more about the businesses and what types of skills are needed to gain employment in the manufacturing industry. The precision of the electropolishing process for Elgiloy metal is an advantage over mechanical polishing, which can lead to a noticeable decrease in the dimensions of a metal part, and it can be controlled to remove less than a ten-thousandth of an inch from the surface.

The metal is passivated in the process, making it resilient against the elements and resistant to natural corrosion. At our facility, we are capable of electropolishing thousands or hundreds of thousands of pieces of metal with Eligoy.

What Is Elgiloy?

Elgiloy is a “super-alloy” consisting of…

• 39-41% Cobalt
• 19-21% Chromium
• 14-16% Nickel
• 11.3-20.5% Iron
• 6-8% Molybdenum
• 1.5-2.5% Manganese

It is used to make springs that are corrosion resistant and exhibit high strength, ductility, and good fatigue life.
These same properties led to it being used for control cables in the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird airplane. Due to its
chemical composition, Elgiloy is highly resistant to sulfide stress corrosion cracking and pitting, and can operate at
temperatures up to 454°C.

Elgiloy meets specifications AMS 5876, AMS 5833, and UNS R30003.

316 & 316 L Stainless Steel can be electropolished. The reason why this metal works well by being electropolished is because it chemically removes parties at a microscopic level, making the steel impervious to rusting over time, since it transforms it into a pure metal.

At room temperature Type 304 is only resistant up to 3% acid while Type 316 is resistant up to 50oC and up to 20% acid at room temperature. Thus Type 304 is rarely used in contact with sulfuric acid. Type 904 and Alloy 20 are resistant to sulfuric acid at even higher concentrations above room temperature.

Hydrochloric acid will damage any kind of stainless steel, and should be avoided.
